THE INTERSECTION OF INTUITION, RELIGION & SPIRITUALITY
One of the biggest proponents of building your Intuition is believing in a Higher Power - and I don’t mean God.
I have the pleasure of meeting hundreds of new people every year in my practice as a Psychic/ Medium/ Channeler. I have my own loft space downtown where I see clients & teach workshops, but I also very much love doing pop-up’s in local shoppes in Asheville, in the efforts to meet as many new people as I can. Regardless of whether I meet a tourist or a local witch, the one thing they both have in common is that they’re dying to learn Intuition and don’t know where to start.
I can help.
I want to say this first and foremost - WE ARE ALL BORN WITH ABILITIES. When I explain my Intuition Origin Story, I don’t want people thinking that it’s something only a select group of folks are born with or inherit. That’s a lie. Everyone - women and men have a form of Intuition that they have the choice to unpack and explore. But unfortunately, we live in a world where Intuition is seen as “other” and something either frowned upon or forbidden in some cultures & religions. A major foundational aspect of organized religion is the dogma that only a select few masculines have access to Source and therefore, are the only people pre-ordained by their deity. Which is a convenient device centered around control of a population if a large group of people believe they’re not special, but one person is “chosen.” This facilitates limiting thought structures that say you don’t deserve access to this energy and instills fear in those who dare to have curiosity around it.
But Intuition & Source is available to all of us.
I have full, unfettered access to Psychic Abilities, Mediumship and I channel non-human energies who are Spirit Guides. The one question I get asked, mostly by men, is “who am I working with?” If I don’t say the Christian God - which I won’t, then they automatically assume that I’m working with the Devil or demon energies, either intentionally or (even more insultingly) haplessly. How do I know who I’m working with if their God isn’t holding my hand? I’m quick to correct them in saying that my Source is Spirit (higher level energies & Spirit Guides) or my Higher Self - an innate, intelligent energy inside of me that is aware of all things. I refer to it as my Divine Feminine, my Inner Child, or the energy that flies at 30,000 feet that navigates placing me in front of the people who are seeking a Message. My Intuition/ Divine Feminine has a lot more discernment and awareness than I do - and She protects & guides me more than any deity can.
So, when clients or friends come to me and ask, how can they tap into their Gifts and Abilities or Spirit/ Source the way I do, I tell them that they need to release everything they’ve been taught and think they know. Here are the best first steps forward:
NARRATIVES/ SELF-LIMITING BELIEFS: Release any self-limiting thoughts or Narratives around yourself: I highly recommend integrating a lot of therapy & Shadow Work around this first step. When we’re born into our families, our parents, siblings, friend group, community - we get assigned a “story” or “narrative” about us that isn’t necessarily true. It’s their projection of us, onto us. These stories can usually be themes of us being not worthy or not smart enough. Maybe we’re not talented enough to be special. Perhaps there was an intuitive person in our family who was strange or eccentric and they became the black sheep, someone we referred to in whispers. Or maybe we touched a Ouija board in our teen years and it became our precautionary story not to mess with energies we don’t know. Whatever it is, you have to let this shit go before you can tap into your Intuition, because it will become your biggest Block if you don’t.
EXERCISE: You’re going to create three Narrative lists: whether they showed up for us or not, our parents told us something about ourselves in our childhood (ie. if you have an absent father figure, you may believe you’re unlovable or not worthy of being shown up for, or maybe your mother figure parented you out of fear, making you believe the world to be a scary place). Write a list of what your Father showed you about yourself growing up (good/bad/neutral), write a list of what your Mother showed you about yourself growing up (good/bad/neutral) and then finally, write a list of what you KNOW yourself to be (good/bad/neutral) as an adult. Any items (good/bad/neutral) that co-exist on your parents’ lists and your list, make that a journal prompt for Shadow Work. Is that Narrative or Belief really true or just their projection?
BELIEF SYSTEM - You’re going to need to firm this one up. I can’t emphasize how important this step is. Before you dive into your Intuition, you’re going to have to get good with what you believe in. Depending on what it is, it’s going to narrow down or open up who/ what you’ll be able to bring in when you’re tapping into Source. Here are two belief structures you can choose from:
“Power-over” belief systems aka organized or monotheistic religion places the Source of your Intuition in the power of a god. You believe that your Source/ Spirit/ Intuition is in the hands of your creator. This removes ownership of your Higher Self from you and can create a false split between yourself and Spirit/ Source. What does this look like? You specifically channel human Loved Ones and a handful of angels but nothing more. You have access to only what you believe is possible.
“Power-within” belief systems are anything outside of a monotheistic ideology. This relationship places the power back to the Higher Self and allows more freedom in opening up your mind to the non-human energies that lie out in the realms. You’re able to facilitate a more free connection to Source/ Spirit, because it belongs to you. With this infrastructure you can tap into human Ancestors/ Loved Ones, Angels & Demons, Daemons, Spirit Guides, Inter-dimensional Beings, Nature Deva & Consciousness, Deities, Archetypes and Energetics.
As a recovered Catholic, I moved beyond the constraints of traditional faith, as I didn’t want to limit myself in what I see. I’ll be honest, there’s one hell of a lot out there beyond humans & our Loved Ones/ Ancestors and I am still humbled by who and what I meet. It’s been a wild ride.
EXERCISE: If you’re stuck and not sure where to begin, try Automatic Writing. This is NOT journaling, it’s actually putting pen to paper for 15-20 minutes and writing out your belief system. The prompt being, “What do I believe?” Pay attention to words and phrases that make their way onto the paper once you dive into the process and stay open. Don’t write anything that feels like an obligation. Automatic writing is a form of Divination, or a way of connecting to your Higher Self. It takes the brain and places it in the backseat, while the oversoul navigates this step. Stay open.
SPIRITUALITY. Most folks confuse spirituality with religion, but they couldn’t be more different. Spirituality is how you ritualize & romanticize your life. I’m a firm believer in taking 20-30 minutes every day and dedicating it to Ritual. This can look like anything from lighting incense and doing a smoke cleanse, meditation or active visualization, light stretching/ yoga, candle scrying with a mirror, drawing a bath with specific scents, writing affirmations or just sitting in nature. On the other hand, romanticizing your life looks much different – I recommend taking one hour a week to do this. Let’s set the tone: you want to be treated like a queen or a king or maybe you just want to tap into your creativity and allow it to flourish – but you can’t wait for someone to show up and do it for you. This is your portal to create an incredible life where, for one hour a week, you’re totally inspired. Go to a museum and expand your knowledge on the world, check out an art exhibit that inspires you, take a hike in nature that fills you with shock and awe. Bring out your Inner Child with play – go to a farmer’s market and people watch, walk through a field of flowers and pick them. Fill your life with so much whimsy, that you begin to feel like the main character in your story. When you finally get that feeling, you’ve hit a good stride in your Spirituality.
EXERCISE: Do something completely out of character for yourself during this explorative time around romanticizing your life, whether that be ecstatic dance, sensual movement, breath work, immersing yourself in a foreign culture for an afternoon, or even hit up a rage room that helps you expel your energy in a creative, fun way.
ROUTINE & PLAY - Your health totally matters and you need to regularly nurture your curious, joyful Inner Child. If you’re going to explore the depths of your Intuition, you’ll be spending a lot of time on your ass. So, get to moving. Whether it be a regular workout routine or hiking twice a week, you need to take care of the body that’s holding the energy. Tapping into your Intuition takes a lot out of you, so Self-Care is key. I’ll be honest, even I struggle with prioritizing self-care or Play as a lifestyle. I now have the rule that for every hour I sit with a client, I spend an hour in a self-care state because being a Psychic/Medium/ Channeler can be heavy (but super important) work.
EXERCISE: Go to a cafe on a rainy day, order your favorite drink & a sweet treat and journal. Allow your mind to wander and your imagination to take hold. Write about your dream life in present tense - then read it back to yourself. Are you already living it, or are there things you need to work on to make it happen?
RESEARCH: This is a non-negotiable. Books, books and more books, babe. Read up on Intuition, get to know your Clairs and dive in wholeheartedly. There is a wealth of knowledge out there around Mediumship and Psychic Abilities and moreso, a number of social media Psychic/ Medium influencers speak openly about their own Gifts. Find you a mentor or mentor yourself (I’m a self-taught, book-taught Medium). Form community around this so you feel comfortable speaking about your journey and celebrate your successes.
EXERCISE: Join a psychic/ mediumship circle that practices either in person or virtually.
DIVINATION: You know what they say, Practice makes perfect. When you’re ready to put your Intuition into practice, make sure you’re coming from a place of pure excitement, curiosity and joy. This is where a lot of folks misstep when they’re on their Spiritual Journey - you need to do the Work first: therapy, de-conditioning, fix your routine & do your research. Don’t get me wrong, grabbing a tarot deck or a pendulum is a fantastic idea but if you don’t do the Work around trusting your Higher Self, you’re going to quickly get swept up in Analysis Paralysis or Imposter Syndrome.
EXERCISE: Go to a metaphysical store and peruse the aisles. What are you drawn to? Is there imagery that grabs your gaze or a tarot deck that makes you feel something? Does a pendulum swing on its own as you walk past it? Do Runes or Staves seem to jump off the shelves at you? Trust your Intuition/ Higher Power when these things happen - it’s all a Message. Purchase what speaks to you and dive in!
TRUST THE PROCESS: Do yourself a favor and trust me when I say this: TRUST YOURSELF. Everyone’s journey back to their Source/ Higher Power/ Intuition/ Divine Feminine is going to be a crooked path and like many other emotional processes, you’ll be bouncing around to different steps along the way. You can take it one step at a time or you can bounce around - whatever feels best, pay attention to how it makes you feel. There is no right or wrong way of doing this but there’s one rule, and one rule only - Get out of your own way because only YOU can hold yourself back in the process of discovering & exploring your Intuition.
